Description

Siri Hustvedt, the acclaimed author of the international bestseller What I Loved, will be joining us to discuss her hotly anticipated new novel Memories of the Future.

1978. Fresh from Minnesota and hungry for all New York has to offer, twenty-three year-old S.H. embarks on a formative year that proves both exhilarating and frightening, from bruising encounters with men to the mysterious woman next door, whose bizarre chants she can hear through the walls of her dilapidated apartment. S.H. records Lucy’s increasingly ominous monologues in a notebook, until one night Lucy bursts through the door to rescue S.H. from a dangerous situation.

Four decades later, S.H. discovers her old notebook from that year. With its record of her adventures and drafts of the novel she’d set herself to write, the past comes flooding back to vibrant life. Except that now it’s seen through the lens of the present. Is that what really happened? Who was that younger, more innocent, eager self? And how far has society come, given the prejudice and violence women still face?

Siri Hustvedt is one of America’s most acclaimed and beloved writers. She is the author of a number of works of fiction, including What I Loved and The Blazing World, which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2014 and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction. She is also the author of the poetry collection, Reading To You, the memoir, The Shaking Woman, and five collections of essays, including her latest, A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women.

Erica Wagner will be chairing this discussion. Erica is an author, interviewer, and lecturer whose works have appeared across Europe. She has appeared on the Man Booker judging panel twice, and reviews regularly for The New York Times.

Please join us for what promises to be a fantastic evening of discussion.
