"MEN DON'T CRY"
Event Information
About this Event
OUR MISSION
We Speak is a non profit organisation. Our main aim is to raise awareness regarding mental health issues as well as supporting individuals who have been affected. This service will provide a support system and encourage people to have a sense of belonging and enhance one's physical, mental and social well-being.
Mental health issues still have a stigma attached to them which makes it difficult for people to come forward and open up especially in the ethnic minority society. Our aim is to shed more light on these taboo topics and eliminate discrimination and ignorance instead of disregarding its impact.
Our mission is to provide healing, embracing self-love, self-care , the basic skills to get through challenges, community groups, a safe environment and emotional support.
We Speak will aim to help individuals rebuild their self-esteem, confidence and help them find their own voice. We believe that every one of us has a purpose on this earth and our aim is to help individuals find that purpose In order to fulfil it and rewrite their story and see life in a different light. By doing this we would hope individuals will understand that they too are worthy enough.
Our mission is to encourage self development, guiding these individuals through their journey. We also believe prevention is better than cure and therefore suicide prevention will also be one of our main goals. Suicidal thoughts are common and the rates of young people (both male and female) who are successful are between 400,000-700,000 globally based on the rates in 2016.
Mental health is known to be the invisible illness, help us make it visible. Your illness is not your identity. it's not how your story ends and doesn't have to define your whole being. We Speak for those that feel as though they don't have a voice!
THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE;
- Professionals and mental health advocates discussing the ways in which mental health is still a stigma in the BAME community and identifying different ways to overcome these issues.
- Spoken Word | Panel Discussion | Q/A
- This will explore the stigmas attached to men having to always be strong and not show emotion and always have "man up". They too suffer in silence and can't show any form of weakness and yet they have the higher rates and risk of committing suicide.
- Men are almost forgotten about when it comes to mental health and in this workshop the aim to explore why this is? how we can break this stigma ?
- What different ways can loved ones support the men around them they know are hurting or trying to heal but won't want to talk about it or express it to anyone else.
- How lonely and isolating it must be to go through this alone.
- At least with females though we still have a stigma attached we can still somewhat 'cry' , let it out, breakdown, have our "moments" but for men it's on a much bigger scale, society doesn't allow them to even have the opportunity to breakdown or show the slightest of emotion and they feel they just have deal with it themselves.
- Majority of men would rather suffer in silence than to seek help or speak up, most times pretend as if they don't care to hide how they truly feel deep down.
- What are the best coping mechanism?
