About this event

Health • Mental health

Women aged 45–54 — the typical age range for perimenopause and menopause have the highest suicide rates among women in the UK.

This sobering statistic reveals a hidden crisis, often overlooked in conversations about mental health and women's wellbeing.

Join us for this essential training session designed to increase awareness, build understanding, and equip professionals with the skills needed to support women navigating menopause and midlife mental health challenges and suicide risk.

Why this matters: This training could be the difference between isolation and support — between crisis and connection. As menopause awareness grows, it’s vital that mental health and suicide prevention become central to the conversation.

Equip yourself with the knowledge and confidence to respond and help make a real difference.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Professionals, volunteers, and community groups working with women aged 40+ particularly those supporting individuals experiencing menopause-related mental health challenges or emotional distress.

This course is especially relevant for those in healthcare, social care, mental health services, voluntary sector organisations, and peer support roles.

This session is ideal for anyone working with or supporting women during this life stage, including but not limited to:

  • Mental health professionals and therapists
  • GPs, nurses, and other primary care or allied healthcare staff
  • HR professionals, line managers, and workplace wellbeing leads
  • Social workers, community practitioners, and voluntary sector staff
  • Coaches, mentors, educators, and support workers

Whether you're providing direct care, offering emotional support, managing teams, or developing inclusive workplace policies, this course will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to better support women through menopause and its mental health impacts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Define menopause stages associated physiological changes.
  • Identify menopause's impact on mental health, including common symptoms and how menopause can exacerbate or trigger them, or be a risk factor for suicidal ideation.
  • Understand the role of hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) in brain function and how their decline affects brain chemistry, mental and physical health.
  • Recognise biological and psychosocial risk factors and their interplay.
  • Analyse the impact of stigma and misinformation on mental well-being, treatment, diagnosis, and distress.
  • Develop sensitive communication skills for discussing menopause and mental health.
  • Acquire knowledge of evidence-based treatments (pharmacological and non-pharmacological), holistic approaches and support resources.
  • Respond confidently by providing accurate information, dispelling myths, and advocaing for improved understanding.

Self-Care

The topics raised in the training delivery can be emotionally evocative. It is strongly advised that delegates should be aware of personal impact that training in suicide can have and should seek the appropriate reassurance, support and guidance from the Trainer delivering the session if they become distressed or affected by any of the topics raised. As an organisation, we encourage that all delegates practice self-care during their time on the course, ensuring they take adequate breaks and manage their own self-disclosure. All trainers have direct contact with a clinical team should needs arise to implement additional support.

Cancellations

If the delegate/organisation cancels a training place:

• All cancellations must be confirmed via email to training@harmless.org.uk at the earliest opportunity

• If a delegate is unable to attend the training, Harmless will allow a replacement to take their place if we are notified about any changes at least 48 hours before the training is due to take place.
