Mental Capacity Act Awareness and Dols (LPS) Overview

On this Mental Capacity Act Awareness and Dols (LPS) Overview course learners will gain an understanding of the Mental capacity Act, with emphasis on the 5 core principles and how they are applied into practice. Understanding the currents Dols process and gain insight into the Government amended Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) Bill.

Course outcome:
At the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Understand why the act came into place and how it supports the person’s human rights

  • Describe The 5 core principles and how they apply to everyday practice

  • Understand the importance and key considerations in supporting and involving people make informed choices and decisions

  • Understand the legal responsibilities under the Mental capacity act and implications of best practice when making decisions for someone in their best interest

  • Understand the role of IMCA, Court of protection, public guardian and Lasting power of attorney.

  • Understand the importance of accurate record keeping

  • Awareness of proposed changes to the DOLS process.

  • Reflect and evaluate current ways of working


Assessment: Certificate of attendance will be issued to all learners that have demonstrated that learning has taken place throughout the session and course outcomes have been met. Learners will be required to participate and demonstrate the Course Learnings throughout the session. This will be achieved through verbal questions and answers, Ongoing observation and involvement in group and individual activities.
Course delivery methods: learners will gain the most out of the sessions through a variety of delivery methods that are used including Powerpoint, individual and group activities, case studies, Scenario’s, DVD clips, Group discussion and research.
