Description

Aims: This a full day course that aims to provide a detailed overview and analysis of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. This will include discussion of cases and guidelines on completing the DoLS Form 1 (Request for Authorisation Forms) and writing up MCA’s for care plans. This session will count towards NMC Revalidation continuing professional development. NMC Revalidation CPD.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the MCA Five Key Principles
  • Assessing and recording capacity (2 stage test) and Best Interest Checklist
  • Overview of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)

Programme:

  • MCA & DoLS legal overview
  • Case Studies, reflection and discussions (including Case law updates)
  • Conducting and recording Mental Capacity assessments & best interests assessments
  • Restraint, covert medication, and use of PRN antipsychotic medication
  • Identifying objection
  • Your Responsibilities during the authorisation period (complying with conditions and recommendations)

    Trainer Profile:

    Steve Chamberlain has experience working in adult social care and mental health for the past 34 years.
    Steve trained as an Approved Social Worker in 1987 and was warranted until 2013 (AMHP since 2008). Steve trained as a Best Interests Assessor in 2009 and continues to practice as an independent BIA.

    Steve has managed adult social care in hospital, mental health and care management services during the past 20 years. This included mental health services in Kensington and Chelsea between 1999 and 2013. Between 2008 and 2011 Steve was seconded to the Department of Health as the London implementation lead for the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
    Steve managed the assessment and care management service in LB Camden from July 2013 until July 2014 when he left local authority employment to become an independent social worker, BIA and trainer.

    Since 2011 Steve has been chair of the AMHP leads network and was an elected member of the College of Social Work mental health faculty steering group. Steve is currently a member of BASW and a member of BASW's mental health Policy, Practice and Education Group (PPEG).

    Projects during 2015/16: Steve reviewed two local authority AMHP services; member of peer challenge team reviewing a city AMHP service; reviewed two DoLS services; prepared two local authority responses to the Law Commission consultation on deprivation of liberty; co-wrote the updated mental health assessors training package for DoLS; co-wrote MCA Learning Materials for Adult Social Workers (published by the Department of Health).
