Mental Health Resilience in Secondary Schools – The Social and Therapeutic use of Horticulture

About this Event

Schools play a vital role in promoting positive mental health and providing early intervention for students who are struggling.

Support and interventions can be provided in a variety of ways. Horticulture has been proven to make a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. School gardens are often an under-used resource in tackling mental health and behavioural challenges.

This training day will explore issues schools face in regards to mental health resilience and introduce social and therapeutic uses of horticulture to improve educational practices. This will include case studies of how this has worked in other schools. You will undertake some practical activities yourself and examine the logistics and with practical tips on how to set up activities like these, including how to get funding to support them.

Objectives

• Discuss the evidence base for social and therapeutic use of horticulture.

• Provide practical training on a range of therapeutic activities that you can use in your school garden.

• Explore garden layout and practical resources that will help you to deliver horticultural therapy sessions.

• Review funding options and staffing considerations for delivering interventions.

Course Timetable

9.30am: Arrival at Hammersmith Academy. Refreshments in the Hospitality Suite.

10.00 am: Background into what the social and therapeutic use of horticulture is and its benefits.

10.30am: Group discussion – sharing some of the issues faced within schools and interventions that have worked.

10.50am: Short tea/coffee break.

11am: Group activity - undertake a practical gardening activity (you will be undertaking the activity, so please dress accordingly):

• A propagation activity

• An animal care based activity

• An activity based around the use of recycling pallets

12.30pm: Sandwich lunch

1.15pm – 2pm: How therapeutic horticulture can be used within schools. Case studies of how it has been used within secondary schools logistics – what sort of activities could you set up within your schools and how to plan these activities.

2pm -2.30pm : Tour of school garden spaces to think about resources needed.

2.30-3pm: Resourcing an activity – practical tips on what you need to run a range of activities that could be based in your school garden.

• funding – what sort of funding is available and how to apply for it

3 -3.30pm: The wide ranging uses of a school garden and Evaluation.
