Description

Sharing best practice to raise awareness and support employee mental health in the workplace.

Attend this free breakfast event to engage with other organisations and share ideas to improve how mental health is supported in your workplace, while helping others do the same. This is the first event, of what we hope to continue quarterly, maintaining the discussion on mental health in the workplace.

Background

In October 2017 and at the request of the Prime Minister, Dennis Stevenson and Paul Farmer produced the ‘Thriving at Work review of mental health and employers’ (TAW). In it, they recognise the huge impact poor mental health has on organisations and the wider economy. Further still, they found that 15% of the workforce have symptoms of an existing mental health condition, with 300,000 individuals with long-term mental health conditions losing their jobs every year.

While both figures are surprising, the second is quite disheartening. It shows the need for greater mental health awareness and support in the workplace.

To provide guidance to organisations for developing their mental health support practices, the authors produced a set of standards they encourage all organisations and the government to adopt. These standards will form the focus of this first event.

This Event

We used the TAW standards to review our own employee support practices and to establish actions to develop them going forwards. While we were pleased with the initial findings, there are still areas to work on and develop further. We would like to share what we do, followed by an activity for attendees to review and discuss the support they offer in line with the TAW standards.

We hope the session will provide attendees with practical ideas and motivation to develop the employee support offering in their organisation.

8:00 – Networking and breakfast

8:30 – Introduction from Ruth Cooke - Midland Heart CEO

8:40 – Individual introductions and your aims for the session

8:55 – The TAW standards and how we used them

9:20 – Conducting your own review and sharing ideas

9:50 – What next? Future events

10:00 – Thanks and close

As you’ll see, it is an action packed morning with a lot to get out of the session. A free light breakfast will be available, such as pastries, fresh fruit and hot and cold refreshments.

What next?

We would love to continue these events by inviting other organisations to share how they support mental health in the workplace, as well as potentially having guest speakers from mental health organisations. It would be great to hear your thoughts at the event. For more information, please email wellbeing@midlandheart.org.uk.

If you would like to work with other organisations to share ideas and best practice, with the aim of improving mental health support in the workplace, then this session is for you! Places are limited, so if you are committed to attending, book your place now.
