Event description

Description

Why do 1 in 12 people in Wales believe that as soon as a person shows signs of mental illness they should be hospitalised? Why do 1 in 7 people believe that people with mental health problems should not be allowed to hold public office?

Continuing to reflect upon and improve the way in which people suffering with their mental health are portrayed in the media - and being conscious of the language and imagery used to describe mental health problems - is an important part of breaking down this kind of stigma.

So we are delighted to bring an important and interesting new workshop to Cardiff provided by expert tutor and practitioner Del Harries, who has worked extensively in the social care sector. Our session will be held at the wonderul Yr Hen Llyfygell | The Old Library building in the Hayes in Cardiff City Centre.

As a result of attending this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify and use appropriate / up-to-date language and terminology in relation to mental health problems
  • Demonstrate a basic awareness of how people with mental health problems have been supported throughout history
  • Discuss a range of possible causes of mental health problems
  • Develop awareness of common types of mental health conditions (incl.- psychosis / neurosis / paranoia / affective disorders / schizophrenia / personality disorder etc.)
  • Discuss public perceptions, attitudes and media portrayals of mental health problems.
  • Appreciate some of the difficulties / impairments experienced by people with mental health problems
  • Explore principles of best practice around people with mental health problems (e.g. needs-led, person-centred support(Maslow, Holistic approaches, talking therapies, medication, complimentary therapies, Medical vs social model etc.)
  • Source further material on mental health problems that may be helpful, including suggested authors / websites etc.

TRAINING METHODS

This is a participative course and participants may be asked to join in with exercises and case studies. Discussion, presentation and hand-outs will also be used.
