Our Mental Health Awareness Training, written by Rob Woollen MSc and Sharon De Mascia MSc CPsyc, demystifies mental health conditions and empowers employees at all levels to have helpful conversations about mental health - with the confidence to assist people in immediate distress. Our unique additional focus on positive mental wellbeing and resilience provides evidence-based tools and techniques to improve the lives of all - reminding us that we all have mental health.

Research suggests that mental ill health costs British businesses an average of £1,000 per year per employee. Yet how many of your managers would recognise if a member of staff was experiencing mental health or emotional wellbeing issues? And how many of your staff would know when to seek help themselves?

With mental ill health common in the workplace yet so often hidden, our workshops provide essential knowledge that can reduce distress, save organisations money, and even save lives.

This one-day course gives people an understanding of common conditions and - more importantly - the individual nature of mental health experiences. Participants learn how to spot warning signs, talk to colleagues appropriately, and guide individuals (including themselves) towards support when needed.

Meet the team

Rob Woollen

Course facilitator Rob Woollen holds an MSc in Work and Wellbeing and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH) and the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Rob’s academic research interests are in the areas of resilience, and the nature of “good work”.Having left school at the age of sixteen for a career in construction (becoming an award-winning project engineer), he has first-hand experience of the issues faced by both manual and professional workers in high pressure environments. Rob lectures at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) Business School and has sat on the School’s Strategic Advisory Board; is a past chair of the North West Health and Physical Activity Forum; a contributor to the pan-European Resilience Project, and a past assessor for the Workplace Wellbeing Charter.


Sharon De Mascia


Lead technical author Sharon De Mascia, is a Chartered Psychologist with an MSc in Occupational Psychology. She specialises in Wellbeing, Leadership, Change Management and Executive Coaching. Sharon commenced her career with the NHS, working in the clinical field and has over 25 years’ experience of delivering organizational initiatives across all sectors e.g. Santander, BBC, the Vita Group, NHS.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

St James Club's postcode is 45 Spring Gardens, Manchester M2 2BG

The club is just over half a mile from Manchester Piccadilly railway station, and less than half a mile from Deansgate railway and metrolink stations.

Participants can take advantage of discounted parking at the King St West NCP, a short walk away from the venue at £10 for 12 hours or £14 for 24 hours (usual price £28.80). Please park as normal and bring cash to purchase a validation ticket from us which will allow you to exit the car park.

What's the refund policy?

We are happy to refund the cost of your ticket at any time up until 30 days before the event. An administration fee of £10 is payable.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No - don't worry -we have a full attendee list

Can I update my registration information?

Yes -please feel free to amend your infromation. Please be aware that training packs are produced in advance, so for courses requiring personalisation, we may be unable to alter those details.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes -we are sorry if you cannot make it to the training as planned, but please feel free to transfer your ticket to a colleague (see above)
