Event description
A day of discussions exploring what is needed for real change to improve support for relatives/carers of people with mental health problems

About this Event

Mental health carer’s workshop: the way forward

This event aims to bring together people from different backgrounds with different experiences to discuss how we can work together to make real change happen.

Despite policies, clinical guidelines, and evidence based interventions, relatives and carers of people with severe mental health problems still feel excluded from services and struggle to get the support they need.

We would like to invite you to join us on Tuesday the 9th July 2019 from 10:30am, with the first talking starting at 11am, at the Friend’s Meeting House, Manchester.

We want this to be a space for relatives, and other stakeholders to come together to discuss what is needed for real change to happen. We will hear from a range of experts including relatives, charities, clinicians, and researchers, who will outline innovative approaches currently underway and their likely impacts.

Confirmed speakers Include:

  • Sonia Johnson - Professor of Social and Community Psychiatry, University College London
  • Jo Smith – Professor of Early Intervention, University of Worcester
  • Sheena Foster – Carer, NHS England - National Secure Programme
  • Chris Lodge – Service User Researcher, Lancaster University
  • Rethink Mental Illness

More speakers to be announced shortly.

In the afternoon, there will be a choice of workshops, where you will be invited to take part in interactive discussions to identify ways forward to enhance involvement and improve outcomes for relatives and carers of people with mental health problems. We will bring together the identified ways we can move forward together including what next steps can be taken and who is best placed to do them.

We invite you to draw on your experiences and opinions of what has been helpful (or not) and your ideas for what is needed to support relatives and carers in the future. This can include what policy would be needed to inform longer-term changes.
