What to expect:

Participants will explore what it means to be a Champion, gain a solid understanding of mental health and mental illness. Learn how to challenge stigma, offer support and promote inclusive, mentally healthy environments. Through interactive learning, real-life scenarios and personalised planning, delegates will leave feeling empowered, informed and ready to make a difference

What is covered in the course?

The session begins by exploring what being a Champion really means, including what they will and won’t do, and how to set healthy boundaries. Participants then reflect on their own wellbeing, learning techniques such as the Five Ways to Wellbeing, the Stress Bucket model and how to build a personal wellbeing plan.

From there, the training dives into mental health literacy, helping Champions understand the difference between mental health and mental illness, how mental health exists on a continuum, and how to recognise common signs and symptoms of distress. Delegates will explore inclusive perspectives, including the mental health experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, and learn about key risk and protective factors.

Practical conversation tools enable participants to practise starting and holding a supportive conversation using a simple framework and tailored scenarios. We’ll also explore how to respond in a crisis and what to do next, including signposting to internal or external support. Finally, each Champion creates an action plan tailored to their workplace: practical ways they can raise awareness, reduce stigma and support a healthier culture every day.

By the end of the session, Mental Health Champions will be able to:

  • Define their role clearly and understand the boundaries and responsibilities it involves
  • Recognise what wellbeing means to them and apply personal tools to manage their own mental health.
  • Explain mental health as something we all have and understand the mental health continuum.
  • Describe common and less common mental illnesses and recognise signs and symptoms.
  • Practice supportive conversations with confidence and empathy using a proven framework.
  • Identify and challenge stigma and discrimination in the workplace.
  • Create a clear action plan to guide how they’ll promote mental health and wellbeing within their organisation.
