About this Event

Attend one of our open two-day Mental Health First Aid training courses and qualify as a Mental Health First Aider, to improve your skills, widen your experience and do something wonderful and meaningful for your colleagues.

What is a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA)?

Someone based within your organisation who is trained and qualified to offer initial support to anyone needing it during a mental health crisis.

A Mental Health First Aider might be:

  • Someone to talk to during a period of depression.
  • Someone to help during a panic attack

Or even more seriously:

  • Someone who knows the right steps to take if they come across a suicidal person
  • Someone who knows how to give initial help to someone going through a psychotic episode

This is something the government now recommend you have in place in your organisation, and more importantly MHFA is something that people across all organisations want to be a part of.

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider
  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it
  • A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health

  • Non-judgemental listening skills
  • First aid for depression
  • Treatment and resources for depression
  • Self-care

Session 3

  • What is an anxiety disorder?
  • First aid for anxiety disorders
  • Crisis first aid after a traumatic event
  • Alcohol, drugs and anxiety disorders
  • Treatment and resources for anxiety disorders
  • Cognitive distortions and CBT
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-harm

Session 4

  • What is psychosis?
  • Risk factors for psychosis
  • Alcohol, drugs and psychosis
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Warning signs of developing psychosis
  • Crisis first aid for acute psychosis
  • Treatment and resources for psychosis
  • Recovery and building resources
  • Action planning for using MHFA

All our courses are provided by a MHFA England qualified instructor. ‘MHFA England’ are the leading body for mental health first aid in England and are part of the worldwide body of MHFA which operate in over 25 countries, established in 2000.
