Event description
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

About this Event

Would you know how to help?

We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Mental ill health can strike at any time and can affect people from all walks of life.

Although things are improving, stigma still exists around mental ill health. As a society, we don't tend to know how to take care of our mental health like we do our physical health. This means that people may not know how to support a friend, family member or colleague experiencing a mental health issue, or where to go for support with their own mental health.

Become a Mental Health First Aider

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

The course will run over two seperate days, either side of a weekend - with Day 1 running on Friday 11th September and Day 2 running on Monday 14th September.

This two day course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider, giving you:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix.

Format

  • Two day face to face course across four manageable sessions
  • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities
  • Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • Due to social distancing requirements, this course is limited to 10 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.
  • For the duration of this course, you will have an instructor on hand to support you through this learning experience. Your instructor on this course will be Rebecca Cheetham
  • We will start each day at 8:30am and finish by 4:30pm, and hopefully a bit earlier on day 2 if we can.

Takeaways

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider
  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it
  • A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health

Location

  • The course will be held at the MK Community Foundation, Margaret Powell House, in Central Milton Keynes.
  • This venue is wheelchair accessible. If you require assistance accessing the building, please ensure you inform the instructors upon booking so we can ensure you are given adequate support on the day.
  • The MK Community foundation has parking available (Ring-Go/ Pay and Display) on Midsummer Boulevard, however, it may be cheaper and easier to catch public transport, if possible, as it a five minute walk from the shopping centre and ten minutes from CMK station.

Refreshments

  • Tea, coffee and water will be provided throughout the day. Because we love the planet, I would encourage you to bring your own reusable cups (although cups will be available).
  • Simple refreshments and nibbles, such as fruit and biscuits, will also be provided, however, you will need to supply your own lunch. MK Shopping Centre is just 5 minutes away with plenty of selection.
