Event description

Description

“At a time when issues of mental health effect so many of our lives, particularly within the within the arts, we feel very passionately about encouraging people to talk about their experiences and find the resources they need to function healthily and cope with life within this often challenging profession and to support those around them.”
Oliver Lansley – Artistic Director, Les Enfants Terribles

This 90 minute workshop addresses issues relating to safeguardiang personal mental health in the arts and aims to bring together people with an interest in discussing these issues and how they effect the industry as a whole and those who work within it in various capacities:

  • Protecting the creative mind – addressing common mental strains felt by people working in creative spheres such as isolation, the need to be ‘emotionally raw’ in performance, finding inspiration, substance use, romanticism and so on.

  • Addressing practicalities – work/earning irregularity, rejection, separation from loved ones, time spend away from home and working unsociable hours.

  • Making it in the industry – barriers and challenges, cost of training, elitism, classicism, representation (race, gender, sexuality, ableism etc.) and the mental impact they have.

Chama Kay is a mental health blogger, advocate and workshop facilitator, a performance poet and works in the theatre sector. Chama has also appeared in numerous podcasts including Kicking the Kyriarchy and Melanin Millenials. In 2016 Chama decided it was time to take his campaigning offline and began running workshops for the No fly on the Wall Academy, SOAS, UCL and Cambridge University.

This workshop is open to anyone who works or aspires to work in the arts.
