Mental Health in the Workplace has never been of greater importance and profile than in these changeable times. High profile support from HRHs Duke & Duchess of Cambridge with their Heads Together Campaign is starting to make open discussion about mental health more likely. Despite this there remains taboos and fears about how to approach this subject in the workplace.

The ONE Group have teamed up with Howes Percival Solicitors and Calm People to bring you this insightful and engaging seminar that looks at mental health from the employer, the lawyer and the human point of view.

Emotional Resilience Specialist, Julian Hall of Calm People will talk about the human side of mental health in the workplace drawing on his professional and personal experience. He will discuss:

  • The key factors that affect our resilience
  • A closer look at one aspect of our resilience - Stress

    • One tip that could dramatically improve your physical & emotional health

Matthew Potter, Employment law partner at Howes Percival will look at the legal implications of stress in the workplace giving delegates a chance to discuss issues arising from a workplace scenario including:

  • Implementing systems to identify stress
  • Looking at management of stress
  • Avoiding claims relating to stress
  • Stress as a response to HR procedures
  • The risks around disability discrimination  

Julian Hall, Calm People

 With more than 20 years’ experience working in challenging corporate environments and dealing with change programmes, Julian has gained extensive experience in counselling, facilitation and training techniques. Julian has an MBA from Nottingham Business School, has trained with the British Association of Anger Management and is an experienced and qualified practitioner of established coaching tools such as Myers Briggs.

Julian’s work encompasses everything from delivering workshops on how to identify and deal with anger, to helping individuals to combat stress by improving their emotional resilience. Julian’s continually evolving mindset has led to him developing an innovative training product for HGV and Bus/Coach drivers and an internet based wellbeing programme licensed to employers of all sizes in multiple locations.

Julian chose to set up Calm People because he wanted to continue to bring emotional resilience, emotional control and core personal development into the mainstream and make it more accessible. This comes from his central belief that everyone would benefit from this work on some level.

Julian is also a founder and director of Calm Execs and My Wellbeing Choices which take his development materials and other specialists to both a niche and a mass market. 

Matthew Potter, Howes Percival 

Matthew has a wealth of experience in all areas of employment law both litigation and advisory. Matthew provides commercial solutions for employers with particular experience of large scale TUPE transfers in both the private and public sectors; restructures; employment tribunal litigation and High Court injunctions.

Matthew writes and presents frequently on employment law issues providing updates and training to clients. He is recognised by both Chambers and Legal 500 as a leader in his field.

Matthew joined Howes Percival in 2017 as a Partner having previously headed teams in the Eastern Region. In addition to his employment practice, he is also a school governor and trustee of an independent school and a member of the advisory board to a regional theatre company.
