Event description

Description

Findings from the British Psychological Society and New Savoy staff wellbeing survey for 2015 shows that 46% of psychological professionals report feelings of depression and 49.5% report feeling they are a failure. The survey demonstrates that psychological therapists have lower levels of job career satisfaction compared with other NHS staff (for full report see: http://www.bps.org.uk/system/files/Public%20files/Comms-media/press_release_and_charter.pdf). Due to an increase in target driven therapies, extra administrative demands on psychologists and resource cuts, the wellbeing of psychologists is being jeopardised. Consequently, the BPS have launched the Charter for Psychological Staff Wellbeing and Resilience in the NHS. This Charter prioritises the wellbeing of psychologists and therefore advocates that a space be created for psychologists to speak about, reflect on and share their thoughts and feelings in relation to rising levels of depression, stress, burnout and bullying in the field.

In response, the Psychotherapy Section are launching a practitioner’s reflective group for those who would like a space to think and discuss these issues further and together. This group will run once a month and it will be a confidential and safe space to talk and listen to each other’s experiences about working in the current NHS. It is an open group, meaning that people can attend as frequently as they like and can join at any month they like. We are welcoming all mental health practitioners, such as psychological wellbeing practitioners, psychotherapists and psychologists. We hope that this group will empower all of us to feel able to speak out more frequently about our wellbeing in the workplace and think about the systemic pressures and challenges we all face, and have to carry.
