Mental Health Skills for Managers Course
Overview
This course is designed by Mental Health First Aid England to create a mentally healthy workplace, where it is vital to build supportive relationships between managers and team members. This four-hour training course will provide a consistent approach to mental health and wellbeing, promoting healthy performance across the whole organisation.
This evidence-based course is ideal for people managers who want to help create an open culture around mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.
The course will take place at the University of Worcester, delivered in person by Natalie Smith, MHFA England Instructor Member.
Benefits of Mental Health Skills for Managers
Managers who are able to support the mental health of their teams will encourage employees to thrive, increasing talent retention and reducing the impact of presenteeism and long-term sickness absence. Providing this training to everyone with people management responsibilities will ensure a consistent approach to mental health and wellbeing across teams and departments. By role modelling good self-care practice, you will inspire others to look after their own mental health and wellbeing.
Pre-course:
Complete a poll to rate the scenarios most related to your organisation and role to assist the instructor choosing scenarios for the group work.
Course content:
- Describe mental health and the impact of stress on employees in the workplace
- Identify if a team member may be experiencing poor mental health
- Use the mental health conversation cycle to confidently have open conversations about mental health at work
- Respond empathetically to challenging situations related to mental health in the workplace (using effective questions and active listening)
- Appropriately signpost your team members to available support
- Describe what support and guidance is available for yourself and your employees, plus how to access it
Format:
- Four-hour course delivered face-to-face (including a short break for lunch)
- Immersive training session, led by an instructor with people management experience
- Opportunities to practice embedding skills through group activities and discussions to share best practice
Everyone who completes the course gets:
- A certificate of attendance
- Knowledge and tools to take care of their own mental health as a manager and empower their teams
- Workbook to use during the course
Course cost:
Standard ticket: £160.00 (RRP) -If you do not meet the subsidised criteria below.
Subsidised Ticket: £80.00* Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire are partially subsidising the cost of this course as an investment in people within the region who are supporting change through physical activity or the VCSE sector supporting positive change across Herefordshire and/or Worcestershire.
Eligibility for the subsidised ticket:
Participants are asked to declare that they are in either employed, voluntary, or trainee role that they consider positively impacts individuals in the community (within the Herefordshire and Worcestershire region), to benefit their health and wellbeing.
To qualify for the subsidy you must be based within the Herefordshire and Worcestershire region and working to:
> Improve physical activity and tackling inequalities
> Improve outcomes within communities with high levels of deprivation
> Supporting individuals with physical or mental health challenges
There are a some general questions to answer at the Eventbrite registration check out to assess this funding eligibility.
Places are limited so if you can commit to attending, book early to secure your place.
This is an in-person course and cannot be joined virtually, please only book if you can travel to the location in central Worcester, England.
Payment includes a workbook at no additional cost.

Cancellation & Refund Policy:
As this course is being funded by Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, so please only book on if you can commit to attending the session, so as not to take up a space as they are limited.
If you do need to cancel please let us know as soon as you are able, so that we can re-allocate the place.
Once you have booked your place, if you cancel with MORE than 7 days notice. You will be refunded the ticket cost MINUS the Eventbrite fees.
If you cancel within 7 days, it is Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire's discretion as to whether a full or partial refund would be issued and evidence may be required to assess the validity.
Please note, we are a small charity so any refund requests may take up to 14 days to process.
