TBAP TSA's 5th Annual Conference

Theme: Developing Mental Health, Wellbeing & Self-Confidence in our schools

As an Alternative Provision provider, we support learners with significant additional health needs on a daily basis. From talking with many of our commisioners and partners, it is clear that education professionals are dealing with mental health concerns on an increasingly regular basis.

With around 1 in 10 of our learners experiencing mental health difficulties and as many as 1 in 6 young people experiencing an anxiety condition during the course of their lives this is something which has an impact on every school. With a potential 5 learners in any one classroom living with anxiety or depression, education professionals are identifying that they would like to build their confidence in supporting the learners in their care.

For this year's conference, we have therefore decided to assemble some of the UK's most inspirational and expert practitioners in mental health and wellbeing. The focus will be on mental health, supporting behaviour, trauma informed practice, regulation and neurophsiology, as well as developing oracy skills in our learners to foster self-confidence.

What are the unique functions of the developing brain and how can the skills of critical thinking, healthy stress coping mechanisms and emotional literacy be nurtured during this time? How does social media, sexuality and gender, link to self-esteem?

Paul Dix - Behaviour specialist, author: When the Adults Change, Everything Changes

How to develop school culture, positive behaviour and learner wellbeing

Pran Patel - Outward facing leader, mental health and staff wellbeing ambassador

How to build an outward facing school culture which embraces well being of all stakeholders, leaders, teachers, pupils, parents, etc. including a brief introduction into looking after one’s own mental health and well being, through an interrogation of self

Mike Armiger - Advisor, trainer, speaker, trauma specialist

A brief exploration of the impact of trauma on a child's ability to learn and their nervous systems, whilst making the case for regulation informed practice across provisions. Mike will also put forward the importance of building psycholgical safety for children that have experienced trauma. Expect a lot of questions, practicality and activity.

James Mannion - Oracy Cambridge, UCL Institute of Education, Rethinking Education)

The Art and Science of Oracy: Creating Confidence through Speaking and Listening

In this practical workshop, Dr James Mannion will share some practical, research-informed strategies for boosting children's confidence through the power of spoken language.
