The 2019 Mental Wealth Festival

Monday 7 - Saturday 12 October 2019

The fifth edition of the Mental Wealth Festival returns this October 2019 to coincide with World Mental Health Day (Thursday 10th October 2019). This year we focus on relationships, family, friendship and the importance of community and support networks.

The Festival provides a forum for informative, challenging and inspiring discussions and workshops exploring mental health issues and takes places across different venues in London. The Mental Wealth Festival is produced by City Lit in partnership with our friends at Beyond Words, The National Gallery, The British Museum and Mad World.

When booking, please let us know on the below email if you have any specific support needs at least two weeks in advance of the event, we appreciate your help in planning. Access: Visitors who require assistance may bring a companion free of charge. To enquire about a free companion ticket please email mentalwealthfestival@citylit.ac.uk. There are limited companion tickets available.

During World Mental Health Day City Lit is holding daytime workshops in The National Gallery's creative spaces and learning gallery.

Workshop Ticket Price: £5 each, Concession** Workshop Ticket Price: £3 each

11:00-12:00 Eye-Spy- A Visual Journey througth the Gallery

Wander through rooms with no fixed trajectory, stop to sketch a detail from a painting that catches your eye. Continue until the end of the session where the concertina is opened up to reveal your personal visual journey around the gallery.

11:00-12:30 Drawing and the Art of Mindfulness

An opportunity to explore the ancient practice of mindfulness in the context of looking at, drawing and appreciating art. During the session we will spend time meditating, slow looking and drawing, and explore their relationship to our enrichment & well-being.

12:30-13:30 Into the Fold

Folding as contemplative process. Reflect on the physical similarities between folding and the structure of the brain with it’s many hidden folds. Experience the tangible, haptic and contemplative process of repetitive folding. Make your own fidget spinners or just fidget with paper. Craft a range of folded, collapsible 3D structures.

14:00-15:00 Writing a Haiku for Mental Wellbeing

Writing a Haiku requires concentration which can be a peaceful distraction. In this workshop with Pearl Elizabeth Dell. May you will learn that wellbeing can come from a closeness to the natural world and in both reading and writing Haiku we can speculate about actual emotions that are not being expressed and work on them in poetry form.

14:00-15:00 Books Beyond Words Book Club

Experience a Beyond Words Book Club and explore the power of reading picture stories together.

14:00-15:30 Drawing and the Art of Mindfulness

14:00-15:30 Friendship Bracelet Making

Learn to make vibrant friendship bracelets with colourful cords, whether you used to make them or are complete beginners. Friendship bands have been exchanged for millenia to honour the bond between significant relationships. All essential materials will be provided with demonstrations and handouts.

16:00-17:00 Tai Chi

Join an introductory-level Tai Chi workshop set amongst the gallery collection with Carla Drayton.

**Concessionary tickets are available to students, visitors over 60, visitors on benefits/low waged or those who are disabled.
