Message In A Bottle: Collaborative Zine Making Workshop with Jael de la Luz
Event Information
About this Event
Learn new skills and explore the themes of Newham and the Royal Docks: its histories, landscapes, communities, issues, dreams and daily life with Jael de la Luz.
In this free workshop you will discuss zines and your ideas with Jael de la Luz and Queer Zine Library who will be there to guide you. It is recommended that you have the minimum of pens and paper to hand during the session so you can start creating pages for a zine.
Prefer to work offline? No problem, we have 50 physical resource packs that can be sent to anyone in the UK wanting to take part at home if online activities aren’t accessible to you. Get your pack here

FAQ
What is a zine?
Zines are diy publications, needing no experience and few resources. They can be a chance to tell personal stories, explore passions or spread information. Zines have the radical potential to share voices and ideas left out by mainstream publishing. For example, zines are often a way for LGBTQIA+ people to read about other queer lives and feel less alone. Message in a Bottle is a collaborative zine making project organised by Queer Zine Library and Queer Newham with funding from London Royal Docks. Our aim is to get more people making zines to share stories, art, and writing.
Who can join in?
The project is an actively queer-friendly space, centring LGBTQIA+ folks. We are particularly keen on reaching participants who are living in or are from Newham and East London, though all are invited.
What happens to the zines I make?
In December 2020 these will be celebrated (anonymously if preferred) in an upcoming online exhibition. All participants will also receive a copy of the compilation zine featuring all work from the project. The collaborative zine will be added to the Queer Zine Library collections.
Who are we?
Queer Newham is a local initiative to raise awareness on gender equality and support the well-being of the LGBTQA+ community in Newham, East London.
