About this Event

This workshop explores how we can use photography to communicate our messages, influence and instruct audiences. Using the artists own work and other key photographers the work shop will focus in on narrative and story telling as a way to engage and move the viewer with an emphasis on strong ideas and strong visuals. The Workshop group will be invited to share their work ( optional) in advance so we can reserve some time to discuss and develop specific queries and projects.

Louis Quail is a documentary photographer who, in recent times, has put focus on personal, long-term projects. His work ‘Big Brother’ (2018), received significant critical acclaim, including being shortlisted for the Arles Book and Text award 2018, Wellcome Trust photography Prize 2019 and was winner of the Renaissance Series Prize 2017. Prior to this project, his Arts Council funded solo show, ‘Before They Were Fallen’ received significant exposure, touring the UK and his interest in Aftermath has taken him to Libya, Afghanistan, Haiti and Kosovo. He has worked extensively for some of the UK’s best known magazines and has been published internationally over many years. He has twice been a finalist at the National Portrait Gallery portraiture award and is held in their permanent collection. He also lectures, exhibits internationally and makes short films.
