Course aims and objectives

This course has been designed to help Emergency Responders better understand the weather, the role of the Met Office and what services they provide. Completion of the course will lead to an increased knowledge and understanding which can be applied when responding to severe weather or a weather related incident.

Target audience

Cat 1 & 2 Responders, especially those who better need to understand the weather, and be aware of the information and services provided, in order to make decisions in response to severe weather.

09:15 arrival for a 09:30 start

09:30 Introduction

Module 1 Basic Meteorology – gives an overview of the meteorological features that affect the UK weather including global circulations, the jet stream, air masses and frontal systems.

11:00 Break

11:15 Module 2 NSWWS – looks at the National Severe Weather Warning Service, how the Met Office decides to issue them and how you can use them to help decision making.

12:30 Lunch

13:00 Module 3 Met Office Products & Services – gain an understanding of the products and services provided by the Met Office to help you ahead of and during an incident including Hazard Manager, CHEMET, WOW and App.

13:30 Module 4 UK Weather – gain an understanding of the different types of weather that affects the UK, help you to understand the potential impacts and learn from past events.

14:00 Break

14:15 Module 5 Group Exercise Scenario

Course Fee

This training is funded through Part 1 of the KRF Partnership Agreement.

This event is restricted to 25 delegates per session, so early booking is advised.
