Course aims and objectives

This course has been designed to help Emergency Responders understand the weather better, the role of the Met Office and the services they provide.

Completion of the course will lead to an increased knowledge and understanding which can then be applied when responding to a severe weather related incident.

09:15 Arrival for 09:30 start

09:30 Introduction

09:35 Module 1 Basic Meteorology: Provides an overview of the meteorological features that affect the UK weather including global circulations, the jet stream, air masses and frontal systems.

11:00 Break

11:15 Module 2 NSWWS: Looks at the National Severe Weather Warning Service, how the Met Office decides to issue them and how you can use them to help decision making.

12:30 Lunch Break

13:30 Module 3 Met Office Products and Services: Gain an understanding of the products and services provided by the Met Office and help you ahead of and during an incident including Hazard Manager, CHEMET, WOW and App.

14:00 Break

14:15 Module 5 Group exercise
