Dr Maxime Boidin, Senior Lecturer in Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport, will discuss the possible long-term health impacts of smoking electronic cigarettes and how they are to be investigated in a new study led by researchers.

In recent years, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have gained popularity as a perceived safer alternative to combustible cigarettes. The prevalence of e-cigarette use among young individuals has risen from 4% in 2021 to 8.6% in 2022 in England. In fact, e-cigarettes use could have at least similar, if not even worse, adverse effects on blood vessel quality than smoking tobacco cigarettes. However, there is no strong evidence to make this statement yet.

Dr Maxime Boidin Biography

Dr Maxime Boidin is a dedicated NHS clinical researcher and a Senior Lecturer in Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Institute of Sport within the Exercise and Sports Science Department at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research is centred on exercise physiology with a specific focus on cardiovascular health in individuals with cardiovascular risk factors or existing cardiovascular diseases.

Having completed his PhD in Canada, his research emphasised developing optimised exercise training interventions for cardiac populations. This involved not only refining exercise training prescriptions but also exploring the impacts of cardiac disease and the benefits of exercise on both the brain and the heart. In the subsequent postdoctoral fellowship, Maxime broadened his expertise through international internships in Australia and the UK, acquiring valuable skills in vascular and cardiac domains.

Collaborating with global leaders in cardiovascular research, Maxime is actively contributing to research projects focused on populations with cardiovascular risk factors or diseases.
