Overview

This course will define metacognition, model metacognition, build motivation and resilience and cover teaching study and research skills.

Course Description:

This course is being delivered online, and a recording will be available for up to 30 days after the course has ended.

The session is in four main parts:


1. Defining metacognition

Here, we will explore:

• How to unpack common myths about metacognition

• How to distinguish metacognitive knowledge from self-regulation skills

• How to use a metacognitive cycle to teach independent learning skills

• How to move from equality to equity to achieve inclusion


2. Modelling metacognition

Here, we will explore:

• How to make a success of teacher explanations and modelling

• How to ‘think aloud’ to model your metacognitive skills

• How to use a four-step sequence to build independence over time

• How to make learners work hard but efficiently to cause thinking


3. Building motivation and resilience

Here, we will explore:

• How to create a classroom culture conducive to thinking and reflection

• How to help learners build intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

• How to teach learners to engage in self-peer- and group-reflection

• How to help learners stay motivated and focused in the face of adversity


4. Teaching study and research skills

Here, we will explore:

• How to embed proven habits of the most successful learners

• How to teach the study skills needed in the classroom including note-taking

• How to teach the skills needed outside the classroom including self-quizzing

• How to teach retrieval and revision skills needed for exams


This course is suitable for:

Teachers and school leaders of all phases and key stages, and of all subject disciplines; it might also be of interest to teaching assistants supporting learning in the classroom and in intervention sessions.

The final information, including how to join the live event, will be emailed to you directly from the NAHT Professional Development team at least 5 days before and again the day before the event date. Unless you advise us otherwise, we will assume that you have received the joining instructions. A refund will not be given for non-attendance on the grounds of joining instructions not being received, it is the attendee’s responsibility to ensure they have the information before the event.

Within 14 working days - 50% charge

Within 7 working days - 75% charge

Within 3 working days - 100% charge
