Event description
Colloquium: Prof. Montserrat Rivas, University of Oviedo, 'A New Generation of Rapid Diagnostic Tests: The Role of Magnetic Nanoparticles'

About this event

The speaker for our May colloquium is Prof. Montserrat Rivas, Associate Professor in Department of Physics at University of Oviedo, who will be giving a colloquium titled 'A New Generation of Rapid Diagnostic Tests: The Role of Magnetic Nanoparticles' on Friday 28th May, 12.30-13.30pm via Zoom (the link to the session will be sent after registration).

The current concern for health pandemics and food poisoning outbreaks demands fast bioanalytical platforms, ideally affordable, easy to use, and portable.

A new generation of magnetic lateral flow immunoassays is emerging as a powerful tool for diagnostics. It relies on magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) as detecting labels, replacing conventional gold or latex beads.

In this talk, the requirements of the magnetic labels and the associated sensing quantifying methods will be reviewed. Examples of their applicability and advantages in the health and food industry fields will be analyzed. Specifically, we will find successful applications for extracellular vesicle quantification for colorectal cancer diagnosis and toxin detection in red wine.

Prof. Rivas’ current research is in magnetic materials with an especial focus on bio-applications of magnetic nanoparticles and bio-sensing. She co-leads a multidisciplinary group specialized in magnetic lateral flow immunoassays for point-of-care bioanalysis.
