MFL SOS: Practical Tips for Teaching Phonics

While the teaching of phonics has always been a key element of the MFL classroom, it has grown in importance recently, especially with the upcoming changes to the new GCSE in England, the growing influence of NCELP, and the increasing focus on phonics as a literacy tool at primary. Studies have shown that better pronunciation can lead to increased confidence in speaking, easier learning of new vocabulary and improved perception of language ability by others. So how do we embed phonics into our language teaching?

Speakers:

Zoë Thorne has taught MFL and EFL in France, Germany and the UK, and is the co-author of a number of French and German IGCSE and A Level textbooks, as well as a successful series of ELT books for the German publisher Cornelsen, for whom she also composes songs for language learners. She is Head of Content at Languagenut, where she works on primary, secondary and advanced curricula, is a qualified web developer, and is currently teaching herself Arabic. She still gets excited about German compound nouns.

Elaine Gelder has over 32 years’ experience as a successful teacher of Modern Languages and EAL both in the UK and in Germany. She has taught in several challenging inner-city schools as well as working with pupils from nursery to Oxbridge level. During her career Elaine has worked as Head of Department, an Advanced Skills Teacher, Specialist Leader of Education, resource writer, trainer, examiner and lead on teaching and learning, and former Senior Director of MFL for Delta Trust Academies, one of the largest and highest performing multi academy chains in the UK with oversight for 16 languages.
