Description

You are warmly invited to the Moray House School of Education, Annual Lecture on 5th of June 2018.

[This event is co-sponsored by Moray House School of Education & the Academy of Sport]

Prof. Bruce Kidd from the University of Toronto will deliver a lecture entitled:

'Fresh winds for equity in sport'

Despite the resurgence of conservative values, misogyny, racism and xenophobia in many parts of the world, there is new appetite and energy for equity in the sphere of international sport. At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Korea, the International Olympic Committee announced an ambitious new plan to realize gender equality in participation, leadership and the media presentation of events. The recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia staged an equal number of medal events for women and men, a first for any major multi-sport games, and encouraged other equity initiatives. There are similar efforts underway to combat homophobia and gender-based violence in sports organizations and countries.

In his Moray House School of Education Annual Lecture, Professor Kidd will outline and analyse these recent developments, placing them in the contexts of the decades-long struggle by those excluded from modern sports to gain opportunities and recognition for themselves, and the contemporary clash of social movements. In particular, he will discuss the new initiatives at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, the renewed struggle by women from the Global South and their allies to abolish the international sex test (which now targets the renowned South African middle-distance runner Caster Semanya), and how these undertakings at the international level affect everyday sports.
