Description

Workshop Overview

Following the tradition of mandala drawings as a ritualised form of artistic meditation, Michael will lead a drawing workshop focusing on basic, repeated gestures. Drawings will be created according to simple rules. The instructions for marks themselves will derive from specific marks in paving stones found in the Gothic cloister of Norwich Cathedral, a historic space of meditation with clear repeated architectural gestures. These drawings will serve as celebrations of ancient stonemasonry techniques and as meditations themselves.

About Michael James Lewis

Michael's practice is focused on the relationship between the language of architecture and the physical experience of space. His work attempts to catalogue and challenge elements of the built environment and explore them through the vocabulary and processes of architecture. Frequently relying on the most basic symbol of drawing convention, the line, he creates structural and graphic diagrams that reduce physical, geographic phenomena into abstracted, clarified prompts. These prompts invite questions about inhabitation, materiality, structure, and order. His practice incorporates and fluctuates between sound, sculpture, installation, drawing, and video. He is interested in the intersections and overlap of a wide range of disciplines and regularly participates in cross-disciplinary collaborations.
