WORD FACTORY PRESENTS:
Sublime Women, a celebration of classic and contemporary short story writers.
This is the eighth masterclass of our Sublime women series, linking classes, salons, our reading club and offering opportunities to hear your work throughout the year. We are delighted to offer this class during our Small Like A Bullet Festival with Mslexia magazine.
Colette flourished in the first two thirds of the twentieth century, one of the best known and most admired French modernists, famous for her beautiful language, style and dissection of relationships. She wrote prolifically - novels, journalism, plays, letters. Moving from the earthly paradise of her childhood in Burgundy to Paris, she hobnobbed with poets and musicians, enjoyed love affairs with other women, was married three times, had many tender and loyal friendships. She worked in music-hall, ran a beauty parlour, wrote compellingly about food, animals, gardens, homosexuality, decor - whatever took her amused and intelligent fancy.
In this masterclass Michele Roberts will use key texts from Colette to encourage writers to explore sensuality, earthiness, emotional honesty and the role of mothers as muses - examining the way in which writing can be brought back to the body.
Inspired by Colette's humour and strategies for literary survival, Michele will discuss the impact of one of her favourite authors on literature and her own writing.
She will also invite discussion and collaboration on a series of writing exercises.
In order to maximise the time available, there will be a limited amount of reading out of work and Word Factory are inviting those participating to send pieces inspired by this session to them for possible publication on our website.
Class limited to 25 places.
THIS IS ALSO PART OF:
Small Like A Bullet – A Day-Long Festival
Small like a bullet, is how A.L. Kennedy has described the short story form. To help ensure your writing has maximum impact, Word Factory and Mslexia magazine are delighted to announce a day-long festival of literary advice, superb readings, and conversation – the penultimate celebration of our Sublime Women 2016 series.
Sharpen your aim: members of the Mslexia team will be on hand throughout the day to offer advice on writing, editing and publishing – www.mslexia.co.uk
