Event description
An event to raise donations for the Royal Papworth Hospital, SWBH NHS Trust & to raise awareness within the Ethnic Minority Groups.

About this Event

Since this time last year Royal Papworth Hospital has treated more than 100,000 patients across all of their specialties. They also gave the hope of life to a record breaking 100 transplant patients. One day last year a record breaking 5 transplant operations in 36 hours were performed by The Royal Papworth Hospital. One patient who received the call to come in for the life changing operation was me, Michelle Hemmings. Therefore, i want to raise money for the organisations that changed my life, through a charity and awareness event.

On the night, there will be guest speakers from the Royal Papworth Hospital, Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, Organ Donation and other

There will be live entertainment, special guests, auctions, prizes, music and much more!

More about my story....

I received a single lung transplant last year February, at The Royal Papworth Hospital.

I am one of the famous 5, who received transplants in a record breaking 36 hours.

Two hearts, two double lungs and for myself, I had a new single lung.

I was placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant in January 2017 as I had lung Fibrosis (ILD), which is scarring and stiffening of the lungs.

This started when I was 24 years old and for the last 5 years, I needed oxygen continuously to breathe and I could hardly walk up the stairs without feeling out of breath.

But I was determined to keep positive!

Initially I had 2 unsuccessful organ matches then I had the call to say there was a lung matched to me so I headed to Papworth….

I felt slightly scared and very emotional within.

It was a daunting journey.

After the lung transplant, I wasn’t able to talk as there was a tube in my throat to help my breathing. But before the transplant I had asked my Mum "to squeeze my hand" if the operation had been a success.

When I felt that squeeze I was so relieved, I just knew then that life was going to get better.

I felt slightly nervous leaving hospital, this was a place where I felt safe. But I knew I had to face the big wide world!

And now I can do the simplest things, like breath without the need for oxygen, walk without getting breathless, walk up and down the stairs. Amazing!

Papworth Hospital, have transformed my life. I cannot thank the doctors, nurses and whole team enough for what they have done for me. They are amazing!

I want to tell my story and raise awareness in all communities about the importance of organ donation. Would you want to be able to give the gift of life to someone else?

You could save up to 9 lives.

I would not be here without my donor...

Think about it....

Discuss with your families.

Sign up to the organ donation programme...

I can only thank my donor for my most precious gift & of course, Papworth Hospital.

Thankyou Royal Papworth & SWBH NHS.
