Event description

Description

A Mid-Autumn Festival celebration of the unique traditional art form of Chinese brush painting.

Artist Peng Su will lead you through this meditative and expressive process, suitable for complete beginners or experienced artists in other mediums.

The day will start with an introduction to the materials and the grinding of your own ink. Peng will briefly cover the history of this art form, it’s evolution into the modern day, and how dedicated artists would typically study in China. You’ll begin with practice of the core brush strokes, putting these together to paint traditional images of bamboo and autumn maple leaves.

Following a break for lunch, you’ll return in the afternoon to experiment with the more elaborate techniques involved in painting beautiful cranes. A popular bird in Chinese paintings, they represent longevity or loyalty. Finally, you can combine these subject matters to create a painting of your own design. Peng will be on hand to work through your ideas and help with composition and techniques. You have the option of finishing your painting with a Chinese translation of your name or stamping it with a red yinzhang.

The day will end with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Peng will talk you through the steps as he presents a ceremony style from North China – where his hometown lies. You’ll have the opportunity to relax and learn the meaning behind each gesture and the tea leaves chosen. The tea will include the sharing of traditional ‘Mooncake’ desserts, eaten throughout China for the Mid-Autumn Festival. This beautiful typically circular patterned cake comes in a variety of flavours and textures. It is quite unique and will give you an insight into the festivities taking place in Asia.
