Mid-Career Conversations for Historians, Session : 'Embarking on a new research project at mid-career'

The Royal Historical Society is pleased to announce a new series of informal, discussion-based events for historians at mid-career. Please note: this event and the wider series are reserved for those who are current members of the Royal Historical Society.

The new series -- 'Mid-Career Conversations for Historians' -- is an opportunity for historians in UK HE to meet and discuss topics of particular relevance to them at mid-career.

The second Conversation now takes place at 11am, Thursday 20 April 2023, on the theme of 'Embarking on a new research project at mid-career'. In this session we welcome historians at UK HEIs who are either working on, or thinking about, a new research project in order to discuss ways forward and how best to plan your research.

As with all Conversations, the subjects discussed are brought by the attendees. However, possible topics for discussion in this particular session may include:

the challenges faced when starting a new research project at mid-career;
building supportive research support networks to sustain you during research;
thinking about a second monograph, and how this differs from a first book;
options for other forms of research communication;
researching and working collaboratively;
how to balance new research with other professional and private commitments.

'Conversations' will be limited to c.20 mid-career historians per session, to enable everyone to speak and exchange experience and ideas. The size of each Conversation means it may not be possible to offer places to all those who wish to attend. We will confirm attendance by Monday 10 April 2023 at the latest. We also seek to cater for those unable to attend at subsequent 'Mid-Career Conversations' which we'll be hosting through the year.

This and subsequent Conversations will be hosted by Professor Julian Wright, the Royal Historical Society's Secretary for Professional Engagement, who'll be joined by Professor Emma Griffin (President of the RHS and University of East Anglia) and Dr Emily Robinson (RHS Council Member and University of Sussex).

Our next Conversation (Friday 16 June 2023) will consider the subject of 'Mentoring departmental colleagues'.
