Event description

The Global Challenges Research Fund..

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries through:

  • challenge-led disciplinary and interdisciplinary research
  • strengthening capacity for research and innovation within both the UK and developing countries
  • providing an agile response to emergencies where there is an urgent research need.

…. and Midlands Innovation

With a collective research focus covering the full breadth of the GCRF Challenge Areas, Midlands Innovation partners are positioned positively to collaborate across multiple themes and pathways to develop projects and programmes to support the Fund.

UN Sustainable Development Goals - Focus

The UN is clear and focused on the goals it wants to achieve by 2030 – having clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in.

With key facts identifying that 663 million people are still without a source of drinking water and 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services, this workshop will explore the opportunities for colleagues to discuss and focus on the relevant SDGs and key targets for water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and the main health-related target of promoting health and wellbeing.

Of particular focus will be the SDG targets for Goal 3 and Goal 6:

Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages:

Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Workshop Aims:

  • To explore the GCRF Challenge areas of Sustainable Health and Well-Being and Clean Air, Water and Sanitation as they map to the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • To network and share best-practice experiences of the GCRF process;
  • To identify where synergies or gaps for exploration may occur
  • To explore the opportunities for developing collaborative projects

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Delegates to improve awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals as they relate to water, sanitation, hygiene and health
  • To create a Midlands Innovation community of interest around the key challenge areas and opportunity spaces
