Event description

Description

Walk through the moonlit night and discover South London's history of lunacy with local guides and soundscape art.

Starts: 11:30pm at the Tate Modern (outside the Turbine Hall entrance)

Breakfast: 3 – 4am at CoolTan Arts

Finishes: 5 am at Burgess Park, SE5 7QH

Meeting at The Tate Modern and ending at sunrise in Camberwell, this is a local history walk created from tales of lunacy, madness and art, researched by CoolTan Art’s volunteers.

Celebrate the summer solstice on this annual midnight walk, and help raise money for the award-winning mental health charity CoolTan Arts.

It will feature a musical interlude of Nocturnes Wonder: a project conceived and produced by composer Isa Suarez in partnership with CoolTan Arts about how music affects our mind, hearbeat and well-being, and the fluctuations in rhythms and melodies which create sequences with adrenaline rushes or the anticipation of wellbeing.

Music to be downloaded on mobile phones, and headphones are available on request.

Tickets:

Free, but we welcome donations to our Crowdfunding page which is raising much-needed funds for the CoolWalks programme: www.spacehive.com/coolwalks

Why not ask your friends and family to sponsor you for every moonlit mile you walk, and help support adults in South London with mental health conditions.

Walk Route:

Leaving Tate Modern and the high tides of the Thames behind us, the walk commences with spellbound, positive affirmations through the back streets of the Borough with the New Moon. Tales of Midsummer’s Eve traditions, the Moon and Lunacy are shared and soundscapes surround. The walk stops for talks at historic burial grounds, Dickens’s old stomping grounds and Southwark whore houses.

We continue walking through Southwark’s ancient thoroughfares with more tales from the city enroute to the old Bedlam where we hear local histories of royal madness, the incarceration of pickpockets, architects, artists and trans men. Ahead of Victorian Artisan dwellings we relax at CoolTan Arts with refreshments, art and poetry before ending our walk with mindfulness steeped in the dawn sunshine in local green spaces.

Join us for this special sponsored walk to support the work of CoolTan Arts and our participants. CoolTan Arts is an award winning arts in mental health charity run by and for adults with experience of mental health conditions. We believe that mental wellbeing is enhanced by the power of creativity.

About the Largactyl Shuffle Midnight Walk

We have been staging the annual Largactyl Shufle Midnight Walk for many years in support of mental and physical health.

The Largactyl Shuffle has been running since 2006 and is named after the oldest anti-psychotic drug, Largactyl, that can have extreme physical side effects including a distinctive shambolic gait, or ‘shuffling’. The walks are researched and led by our Largactyl Shuffle volunteer group who meet weekly to plan and research.

The full walk is open to join in for the distance that suits them, You can join us for half an hour, half a mile or the full distance. Route accessible to wheelchair users. Call 07985 658443 if you cannot find the walking group.
