Event description
Join us for a magical evening of Christmas carols and Early Music in Bishopsbourne’s atmospheric thirteenth century church.

About this Event

Oratorio soloist and mezzo-soprano Sophia Brumfitt and renowned lute player and maker, Din Ghani, will perform in this one-off yuletide concert.

Present your ticket at the Mermaid Inn on the evening to receive an exclusive festive discount on mulled wine.

The versatility of Sophia Brumfitt’s voice has enabled her to work in areas spanning the entire spectrum of Early Music - from oratorio soloist to renaissance and medieval ensembles. She has just completed her MMus at Royal Holloway University of London, having received her Postgraduate Diploma in Early Music Performance from the RCM in 2000. She has performed in Australia, France, Belgium, Germany and the UK with Ensemble Elyma, The Dolmetsch Ensemble, Bardos Band, Mediva, Celestial Sirens and Rosa Mundi, which she co-founded with Lutenist Rosemary Hodgson, performed Baroque Dance for Mercurius Company and been featured on the BBC4 documentary ‘Renaissance Unchained’. She continues to study with vocal tutor Jessica Cash.

Din Ghani began playing the lute in 1975 and took up lutherie in 2003 in order to meet his growing need for a wide range of early plucked stringed instruments. Since 2007 he has participated regularly as an accompanist in lutesong masterclasses given by Dame Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb. The coaching received from David Miller and Michael Fields at these events helped hone his accompaniment skills. This passion for lute and continuo song led him in 2011 to form Musicke in the Ayre through which he has so far given over 125 recitals all over the country and abroad, each with one or more individuals from a growing team of over 25 singers and other instrumentalists who share his passion.
