Migrant children in Scotland: Sharing good practice in supporting new migrant groups

Conference outline and call for presentations

This conference, aimed at practitioners involved in working with migrant groups and policy makers, as well as established researchers and student researchers, will look at the issues involved in effective service delivery and improved practice. The event will be an opportunity for practitioners from a range of statutory services (education, health, leisure, social work, police etc.) and community-based organisations to share ideas on good practice in delivering services effectively in relation to the specific needs of the newly arrived migrant families and we are keen to involve practitioners presenting their own experiences in any of the following areas of work:

  • Migrant children and families’ needs and expectations from services
  • Barriers in engaging families with a particular service
  • Challenges in the education of migrant children (educational achievement, language issues, inclusion, parental involvement etc.)
  • Transnational practices in migrant families
  • Migrant children’s opportunities for leisure
  • Issues faced by certain ethnic groups in engaging with services
  • Community engagement of migrant groups; volunteering
  • Health provision for migrant groups
  • Housing issues for new migrants
  • The economic crisis and impact on services

Presentations on related themes will also be accommodated.

We invite practitioners, community-based workers, policy makers, students and researchers to present their work at this event. We are particularly keen on applications from practitioners directly involved with newly arrived migrants and from migrants themselves, to talk about their experiences.

Presentations and talks will be given 20 mins, with 5 minutes for questions afterwards. Presenters can show related materials from their work, talk freely or use slides. A computer and projector will be provided.

Anyone interested in presenting should submit a title and a short outline (200-300 words) of their talk to Daniela Sime, conference organiser at: daniela.sime@strath.ac.uk by Friday, 10th May 2013. You will be informed if your presentation has been accepted by Friday, 17th May 2013.

Conference programme

The conference will include a combination of papers from key note speakers, presentations from practitioners and researchers and workshops. A more detailed programme will be announced by Wednesday 15th May on the project website: www.migrantchildren.net
