Formerly The Strum Lovin' Criminals, Mike & the Criminals are an organically grown Horsham based mainly acoustic band covering the genres of soul, jazz, folk and rock (with usually something to appeal to everyone's taste apart from thrash metallers!) It started out as Mike - the Strum Lovin' Criminal being joined by fretless bass player Owen Wilson (Chinchillazilla & Nemisis) and alternately doing gigs with Andy Whiteley, upright bass (of MAKSS, Rabbit Foot and Concrete Brioche), then Steve Chapman a guitar wizard and music teacher. This was closely followed by local legend Paul 'Vlad' Sharman on cojon and vocalist Anna Dubois.
After playing in various combinations, the full outfit played at the Horsham Battle of the Bands and the sound just smoothly fell into place. The song outlines are written by Mike Whiteley and the band are allowed to colour in the sound pictures with their own expertise. The band are currently mixing a second album of songs but will perform some of their classics such as Feels Like September (how apt!), Italian Skies and Long Goodbye alongside new songs such as Is This Love and Maybe. There will be the odd cover thrown in too. As they are not a covers band most gigs are played in discerning music venues, so they are tremendously happy to be invited to play at the Lindfield Arts Festival. Mike will even be playing a solo set at the Arts Festival Preview Evening. Cd's will be available. Classic songs, well performed by seasoned (!) musicians with a guy from 'Up North'.
We are sure you will find something to move some part of your body or your soul.
