Description

Military Landscapes: Sunday 8th September 11.00-14.00

Free Guided Walk from Saltergate Car Park towards RAF Fylingdales

Dr Michael Mulvihill and Professor Rachel Woodward (human geographer specialising in military geographies, Newcastle University) will lead a walk along part of the Lyke Wake Walk towards RAF Fylingdales. The walk will make visible the complex phenomenological impressions and interactions the military and space radar has upon the landscape and environment of the North York Moors National Park.

Meet at Saltergate Car Park (parking charges apply, cash only) we will then set off along the public footpath towards Saltergate Brow where we will survey the landscape and look at the position of RAF Fylingdales, leading to the second stop at Malo Cross then onto the marker stones for RAF Fylingdales, opportunities to stop and discuss ask questions and share knowledge of the area and landscape. We hope the walk will enable us to share knowledge of the area with people who may be very familiar with the landscape. Please wear suitable footwear, clothing and bring refreshments as we will aim to take a break and enjoy the scenery. The walk is around two hours, the return walk is at your own pace and if you choose to continue on instead of heading back to the car park please feel free.

This is a FREE event but places are extrmely limited, please scure your place without delay.
