Brigadier Norman Allen reminisces about his personal experiences serving in 1959 Hong Kong.

This talk also includes entry into the British Lions Chinese Dragons Exhibition (see details below)

Speaker Profile:

Norman Allen was born in South London in 1937. His schooling was interrupted by the Second World War and by more than a year surviving an episode of TB. He was called for National Service in 1956, to be commissioned inthe Royal Military Police. Granted a Regular Commission in 1958, he served in London and Singapore, before sailing to Hong Kong in 1959, where he married Lois in 1961 (they met in 1955 at Wimbledon High School). Subsequently he served a wide variety of military posts in Britain, Germany (including six years in Berlin) andelsewhere. He is a graduate of the Army Staff and the National Defence Colleges. He was promoted to Brigadier in 1986, to be the Provost Marshal and Inspector of Establishments (Army) until his retirement in 1990; during this appointment he was appointed an Honorary ADC to Her Majesty and was advanced from OBE tobe a CBE. On retirement, he became the Administrator of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) 1991 – 2000). Thereafter, he studied Theology and Natural Sciences, to become a Lay Minister and a graduate with the Open University. Lois and Norman are very proud of their three children and nine grandchildren. His close links with Hong Kong have continued since 1962. In 2012 Norman was pleased to become the Patron of the HKOR Benevolent Association. His interests include travel, gardening and water-colouring.

  • British Lions Chinese Dragons Exhibition (Regent's University London)

From 6 July to 31 August, Ming Ai (London) Institute and Regent's University London will present the exhibition British Lions, Chinese Dragons. This is part of the delivery of the British Chinese Armed Forces Heritage Project which aims to unveil the untold stories of Chinese people that have served in the British armed forces throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Featuring a comprehensive timeline of Sino-British military collaboration and selected oral history interviewees from the British Chinese Armed Forces Heritage project as well as an in depth examination of the Chinese Labour Corps of World War One and the Battle of Hong Kong in World War Two.

  • British Chinese Armed Forces Heritage Project

Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, British Chinese Armed Forces is a 4-year partnership project (2015-2018) collaborated with Ming-Ai (London) Institute and Regent's University London. The primary aim of the project is to create a historical archive which will become the basis for the generation of a series of related community initiatives.
