Event description
A talk by local miller Peter Marriage

About this event

Millers in the Chelmer Valley were using and modifying the river long before it was made navigable for boats. Before the industrial revolution wind and water power were the only available sources of power for milling wheat, or indeed any other industrial processes too heavy for muscle power alone. Plenty of examples of millers having diverted the river remain, while others have been erased by more modern

needs.

Through his long career with the local family-run milling company, Peter has a unique knowledge of the milling industries which grew up along the Chelmer. His home right on the banks of the River, and surrounded by the flood plain, has given him an intimate understanding of the River's ever changing states and moods.
