About this event

    21st and 22nd August

    Penarth Chapel, Penarth Cemetery

Min Nos is an immersive sound and sculptural installation that invites the audience to experience and explore the shifting and shadowed world of the forest after sunset and into darkness. Inspired by the ancient temperate rainforests in North Wales, Coed Felenryhd, and Llennyrch, lands rich in Welsh folklore, myth and ecology, the installation becomes a surreal entranceway into these ecologically rich and mythologically entwined landscapes.

The performance starts at 8pm, when golden hour starts to fade into dusk then darkness, drawing you into an immersive soundscape where the forest breathes and murmurs around you. This sonic performance echoes the real-time sunset outside, where the installation awakens, inviting you to listen and sit whilst the imagined acoustic world of nocturnal creatures and folkloric echoes: spectral calls, creaking roots, gentle footsteps, and whispering canopies are woven through a bed of ambient electronic drone pulsing, as if the heart of the forest is guiding you into the darkness.

Ecological in both form and essence, the sculpture hangs above you, built of natural materials foraged from forest and woodland. These elements form a structure that feels both rooted and ritualistic, evoking altars, nests, or something grown over centuries. The work invites reflection on deep time, decay, and the unseen labour of the forest floor, while also foregrounding the entangled relationships between human and non-human worlds.

In the daytime of the 21st and 22nd of August, you can visit the chapel to see & hear the installation, including ambisonic field recordings (taken from the forest throughout the day from dawn till dusk) then you are invited to join the performance in the evening to witness the installation transform.
