Mind The Health Gap was a year long collaborative project between Greater Govanhill community magazine and The Ferret investigative journalism co-operative.

We began last autumn by speaking to community organisations around Govanhill. We wanted to find out what the issues were – the barriers people faced, the health implications of them, and how they were navigating them. The Ferret then took these issues and delved into the data available to explore patterns on a Scotland-wide basis. We have since collectively been reporting on responses that exist – here in Govanhill, across Scotland and the UK, as well as from further afield.

Our work also drew upon recent research into this issue. An independent review into health inequalities in Scotland published by the Health Foundation stated that the biggest issue was that ‘the health of people living in the most deprived local areas is being left behind the rest of society’.

As the project comes to an end, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring together people with experience of health inequalities, those involved in responses, journalists, researchers and policy makers for a conversation on this important topic.

Transport Facilities

Car Parking

On-campus car parking is managed by the University car parking scheme. To book a space, please use this link to register and book.

Gilmorehill Campus has limited car parking available for staff permit holders.
Some visitor spaces can be pre-booked.

For visitors or one-off parking, the nearest car park is on Bunhouse Road, adjacent to the Kelvin Hall. This is a pay-and-display car park managed by Glasgow City Council. Other payand-display parking is available on Lilybank Gardens. University permit holders can use this car park if they display the appropriate permit.

Disabled Parking

It is possible to book UofG spaces on University Place, however these bookable parking spaces are not within 10m of the entrance. Further info hereThere are 8 non-bookable disabled spaces (Glasgow City Council spaces) within the 10m distance.

Cycle Provision

There are 88 cycle parking spaces located in Infirmary Way and University Place. The number of these aligns with BREEAM TRA-03 Cyclist Facilities and a site-specific travel assessment. There are two bicycle shelters on the North East side of the Clarice Pears.

There are approximately 1800 cycle spaces provided across the University campus and are within a short walk of the School of Health and Wellbeing. Further information on travelling to the University, including by bicycle, is also available online and in the University of Glasgow Travel Plan.

Bicycle parking on Gilmorehill campus

Active travel showers (inc 1 accessible) and lockers are located at the North East corner of the building adjacent to stair 1. Refer to section 1.11 for use of lockers within the building.

Cycle storage spaces cannot be reserved. Cyclists remain responsible for the security of their bicycles at all times, whether externally or internally stored, and should provide their own locking devices and insurance cover.

If cycling/walking to or from the building through the campus South of University Avenue, you may pass through some gates. Please take note of the gate opening times and accessibility.

Local Public Transport

The School of Health and Wellbeing is located within the Western Campus and can be accessed via Byres Road, University Place and Dumbarton Road on the University of Glasgow Gilmorehill Campus, in Glasgow’s West End. Please visit the ‘Maps and Travel’ section of the University webpage, on how to travel to the Campus.

University of Glasgow Gilmorehill Campus, where the School of Health & Wellbeing is located, is well connected by public transport.

A taxi rank is situated on Byres Road, at the entrance to Ashton Lane. The closest drop off/collection point to the building is the west/ Church Street entrance.
