You can move towards a more meaningful life, greater contentment and social harmony.

Do you typically respond to difficulties in your life by:

  • criticising yourself, feeling shame?
  • experiencing fear?
  • blaming others?
  • feeling overwhelmed, isolated, alone?
  • avoiding difficult feelings?

Rather than fighting - or trying to avoid - difficult feelings, we can learn to be compassionate towards our own experience, and so move towards greater peace in our everyday lives.

Both mindfulness and compassion harness our capacity to alleviate our own suffering - and our sensitivity to the suffering of others - they can help free us from destructive thoughts, behaviours and emotions.

This 8-week course runs on 8 consecutive Friday mornings from 10.45-1.15pm in the heart of Islington, north London. It brings together the ancient practices of mindfulness and compassion-based approaches - both of which are validated through evidence-based contemporary research.

This course is for you if you:

  • want to move towards positive change
  • are curious about mindful compassion and would like to know more as a newcomer
  • would like to learn practical skills for bringing greater compassion into your everyday life
  • would like to develop an understanding of the theoretical models of mindfulness and compassion-focused approaches
  • or have already completed a mindfulness course (MBCT, MBSR, or Breathworks) and would like to support your ongoing practice

who runs these courses?

The courses are taught by Lokadhi Lloyd and Korina Ioannou.

Korina Ioannou is an experienced clinical psychologist with specialist training in Compassion Focused Therapy and a personal and professional interest, and practice, in mindfulness. She has worked therapeutically in various NHS settings and currently offers therapy, training and supervision in Compassion Focused Therapy in Islington.

Lokadhi Lloyd is a fully trained mindfulness teacher and practitioner, who has taught in the public and voluntary sectors since 2004; she supervises and trains other mindfulness teachers. She is also a psychotherapeutic counsellor practising in Islington, bringing mindfulness and compassion-based approaches into her work.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Do I need to attend all classes?

This is an 8-week course, and continuity is important. Each class builds on the previous one, and on the home practice you do between classes. If you miss a class, it will affect what you are able to get out of the course overall. If you think you might need to miss one of the classes it would be better to book at another time.

2. What happens during a mindful compassion course?

Each teacher will bring their own experience and expertise to the course, combining mindfulness meditation and the principles of compassion-focused approaches. The course is practical, experiential, and underpinned by sound theoretical understandings and scientific research. Breath and body-based practices, imagery work, and gentle mindful movement are typically part of the course.

To get the best out of the course, you will be encouraged to put into practice some of the things we do in the class during the week. Practice between classes will support your learning by integrating into everyday life what you learn in class.

3. I'm completely new to the approach, does that matter?

Not at all. The course is suitable for complete newcomers, and many participants have no previous experience of mindfulness, compassion-based work, or meditation.

4. Can I come to the course if I'm very depressed, anxious or stressed?

We would like the course to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. If you are currently mildly depressed or stressed you may benefit from the course. However, there are certain conditions and circumstances where it may not be helpful, or where it may be better to wait before joining this course.

5. Is this group therapy?

No. Although the course includes elements which are psycho-educational and offers experiential learning, it is explicitly not therapy, and there is no need for you to reveal in the class any aspect of your life which you prefer to keep private.

6. What if I'm taking medication?

This shouldn't prevent you from coming to the course. It is, however, essential that you do not vary any prescribed medication without first consulting your health professional or medical practitioner.

7. How big are classes?

There may be up to 20 people on the course. Some of the work may be done in small groups or pairs.

8. Do I need to bring or wear anything special?

Not - it's helpful to wear something loose and comfortable, but just bring yourself. Some people like to bring a light blanket or yoga mat.

9. What is the cancellation/refund policy?

Bookings close at mid-night on 30/4/18, and no refunds are made after that date.

A full refund, less a 10% booking fee, will be made when a cancellation is made by 31/3/18 midnight.

25% of the fee paid will be refunded when a cancellation is made between 1/4/18 and 15/4/18.

No refund will be made after 15/4/18.

10. Are there other terms and conditions?

By placing an order you are indicating that you have read, understood and accepted the following Terms and Conditions:

  • You are booking this course for yourself, and not for somebody else.
  • You are over 18 years old.
  • The teachers reserve the right to refuse access to the premises/the class where there is reason to believe that the above conditions have been breached, or where threatening, bullying, harassing or disruptive behaviour occurs.
  • The teachers will not be liable for any losses or expense (including course fees and consequential damages) incurred by anyone attending the course.
  • You are agreeing to the cancellation and refund policy stated above
