Mindfulness for Health
Presenter: Dr Caroline Hoffman – The Haven - Breast Cancer Support Centres
Caroline will talk about Mindfulness through the process of Mindfulness based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and how it can enable you to become more effective and resilient in the workplace and beyond.
As well as this instructive talk, there will be plenty of opportunity during the evening to practice mindfulness and share thoughts and ideas
Caroline was first introduced to mindfulness in 1991 by the recently departed Sonia Moriceau, a well-known teacher of mindfulness who was based in rural Herefordshire.. In addition, she has trained in mindfulness with the founder of MBSR, Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, Dr Saki Santorelli, Christina Feldman, Professor Mark Williams, Florence Meleo-Meyer, Melissa Blacker, Ad Brugman and Dr Ian Gawler.
Caroline started introducing a programme of mindful awareness of breathing to nursing and rehabilitation staff and patients at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust during her time as Nurse Consultant there 12 years ago. After this, she commenced her part-time PhD at University of Southampton in 2003. She trained as an MBSR teacher at the world leading University of Massachusetts Centre for Mindfulness in spring 2004.
She started teaching and researching MBSR in one of the largest randomised controlled trials to date with 229 women with breast cancer attending The Haven breast cancer support centre in London after this and published her research findings in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology in April 2012. A second paper of qualitative data results was published in the journal entitled Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. She also taught MBSR with women with metastatic, advanced breast cancer in 2011 in an additional research project in collaboration with the University of Southampton.
Caroline has spoken regularly on her research findings at international mindfulness conferences in recent locations as diverse as Boston USA, Brisbane Australia, London and Rome. Caroline continues to teach MBSR programmes at The Haven, courses which are now open to all, not only people affected by cancer. She also runs fortnightly mindfulness movement and meditation practice classes at The Haven and monthly classes at The Cancer Centre in Wimbledon, London. She also does some individual mindfulness teaching. Caroline continues to support and supervise health professionals embarking on teaching mindfulness in the cancer setting. All the while Caroline continues to deepen her practice and understanding of mindfulness through participating in regular retreats.
