Event Details

Mindfulness refers to ‘kind compassionate - awareness’. It is about living fully in the present moment. This means paying deliberate attention to what you are doing, as you are doing it, with open compassionate awareness.

Mindfulness and Compassion based training courses offer an excellent foundation for understanding and practicing mindfulness and compassion meditations both in a direct practical way and also within a group setting. It can offer an insight for many in cultivating a different kind of relationship with oneself and others and enhance your experience of stress-free living and being.

Led by Dr Avinash Bansode (Mindfulness Honorary Chaplain)

Venue: Room I Chaplaincy Centre, 1 Bristo Square, Edinburgh University, EH8 9AL

Time: 1pm to 3pm (2hrs),

Dates: February - April 2018

Taster Session: 5th Feb (introduction to mindfulness and mindfulness training)

Session I: 12th Feb (Autopilot Mind and Patience)

No Session on the 19th Feb 2018

Session II:  26th Feb (Dealing with Challenges and Attentiveness)
Session III: 5th Mar. (Awareness of Body & Breath and Gentleness)
Session IV: 12th Mar (Staying Present and Empathy)
Session V: 19th Mar (Turning towards challenges and Allowing/Letting Be)
Session VI: 26th Mar. (Working with Thoughts and Acceptance & Letting Go)
Session VII: 2nd Apr. (Mindfulness in Everyday Life and Joy of Connection)
Session VIII: 9th Apr. (Transformation and Healing of all things)

All Day Session: Dates and times for the day session will be provided in week one.

This Basic Foundation training in mindfulness and compassion will help you to systematically develop the skill of being present with your experience. The introductory session and the eight-week course aims to assist you in dealing with what can be stressful for you and helps you to take better care of yourself and get the most out of your life. The majority of people completing this programme report lasting physical and emotional/psychological benefits including; an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, heightened self-confidence, an increased ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term busyness and stressful situations and  balance and resilience in life and work situation

Educators are interested in the calming and focusing qualities of mindfulness and compassion that help students and staff reduce stress and become more patient and present in the learning environment, but they are also interested in how that calm stability can positively affect cognitive functions like attention and memory, and lead eventually toward greater understanding and wisdom. Educators are also interested in how mindfulness and compassion can assist the work of the academy in the need to plan, set goals, set priorities, and move back and forth among tasks.

The Chaplaincy is for all faiths and none - a place at the table for everyone. Our team covers a wide variety of beliefs, including humanism and all major world religions, but you don't have to be religious or spiritual to attend events at the Chaplaincy or use our services. All are welcome.

The Chaplaincy offers a wide variety of wellbeing activities, which are all supported by studies indicating that they are likely to improve mental health.

Our main activity in this area is Mindfulness and Compassion Based Approaches, led by our Mindfulness Chaplain, Dr Avinash Bansode (, and our Associate Chaplain, Ali Newell (
