Mindfulness & Creativity Workshops is a series of one-off workshops exploring the relationship between mindfulness and creativity as a means of enhancing wellbeing and getting in touch with living the life we always imagined.

More Curiosity than Fear.      

Workshop Overview

If you already have a creative pursuit and would like to bring more mindfulness into your practice then this is for you. If the ‘C’ word (creativity) terrifies you then this is exactly for you!

Each workshop includes mindfulness and playful creativity, exploring a different creative aspect (such as creative writing, playing with paper, colour and texture) approached from a mindful basis. These are not just ‘have a go’ sessions, but a chance to deeply explore creativity from a present awareness. Led by an experienced workshop leader in a warm, friendly atmosphere with a maximum of 6 participants.

These workshops can help to address the fundamental reason many people don’t engage creatively, because of fear. Creativity is something that children do naturally, until they learn one way or another that they are no good, or not as good as others and so they stop being creative. Many adults feel they don’t have the time for the luxuries of creativity and give up hobbies or pastimes they enjoyed previously. 

By engaging with, and giving ourselves the opportunity to enjoy creative pursuits we are engaging and stimulating a different part of the brain; giving ourselves permission to play and see what happens without an expectation of outcome.

 

Workshop content

Creativity can take many different forms. These workshops explore a variety of different craft activities. For the purposes of the workshops these are;

 

Session 1: Playing with words, including a creative writing exercise

 

Session 2: Playing with paper, including making a card or simple concertina book

 

Session 3: Playing with colour, including a technique with watercolour pens and water droplets.

 

Session 4: Playing with pattern, including a contemplative exercise exploring pattern-making

 

Session 5: Playing with words II, including exploring a meaningful word or emotion from a creative perspective.

 

All creativity involves an openness to what is in front of us, noticing what is present which is why we use the term ‘more curiosity than fear’.

 

Who can attend 

These workshops are suitable for beginners (to both mindfulness and/or creativity), as well as those wishing to refresh, deepen their mindfulness practice and creativity in a fresh way. We invite everyone to put aside their previous knowledge and experience (or lack of it!) and engage a Beginner’s Mind.

Participants may join for a variety of reasons; simply taking the time to prioritise their wellbeing, wishing to rekindle a past nourishing activity; facing a fear; or recognising the health benefits of engaging with creative pursuits. You can choose to attend a single workshop, or all 5.

 

The Venue

The venue is a private house in Collingham near Wetherby. As such the full address will only be disclosed after booking, in the Joining Advice available one week before the workshop takes place.

Please note the venue is only accessible by public transport on buses travelling between Leeds and Wetherby. There are car parking spaces on a drive and on-street.

 

Workshop Schedule 

Each workshop takes place on Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 9.00pm, on the following dates
January 24th, February 7th & 21st, March 7th & 21st.

 

The Workshop Leader

The workshop leader is Dr. Lauri Bower.

Lauri has 30 years experience of mindfulness and meditation practice, and has been managing courses and retreats for 15 years. She joined the York MBSR team in 2012 and has recently completed her Ph.D. in Mindfulness. To date, over 300 people have completed mindfulness courses with Lauri. She has a lifelong engagement with creative pursuits in sewing, dressmaking, embroidery, calligraphy, jewellery and bookbinding and has more recently discovered how the practice of mindfulness informs her poetry writing. She regularly posts poems and her creative work to her blogs, Mindful Living http://lauribower.blogspot.co.uk/ , Creative Living http://bowerl.blogspot.co.uk/ 

Lauri’s own experience of fear overcoming curiosity was on an Art Foundation course. She had a good enough portfolio to get onto the course but in the middle of one life-drawing class the tutor explicitly said to her, ‘don’t draw! You can’t draw!’ And she spent many years believing this until recently, when personally exploring creativity from a mindful perspective managed to show her otherwise!

Is there disabled access to the venue?

The venue is a private house with a ramp to the front door, and a downstairs bathroom but this is not large enough for a wheelchair.

What further information will I receive?  

All our delegates receive "Joining Advice" one week before the workshop commences.  This email will include information on the workshop schedule, venue and facilities. Please note, the venue is a private house, so details of the full address will only be given after booking.

Cancellation Policy

If you decide to cancel your place, you will receive:

  • A full refund provided we receive notice of your cancellation at least 14 days' before the date
  • A 50% refund if we receive 13 - 7 days' notice
  • No refund if we receive less than 7 days' notice

 In the case that the workshop is cancelled by York MBSR, all fees will be refunded in full
