"A moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience"

Oliver Wendell Holmes

Workshop Overview

Moments of insight bring great potential to our lives, be it moments of significant learning or of creativity. Yet what do we know about insight and what impact do our daily routines and behaviours have on the likelihood of experiencing moments of insight?

In addition to considering secular research on insight we will explore mindfulness meditation, moving beyond the common discourse surrounding mindfulness in relation to wellbeing to its role in the cultivation of insight.

During this introductory workshop we will explore

  • The role of insight in our lives
  • Research into both insight and meditation
  • What mindfulness is (and isn’t!)
  • The cultivation of insight through the practice of mindfulness
  • Consideration of how we might consciously begin to cultivate skills, behaviours and environments supportive of insight.

You will also have the opportunity to practice mindfulness and to understand some of the common misconceptions about meditation.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is ideal for anyone looking to explore insightful ways of responding to personal and/or professional challenges and also to those in creative roles, keen to cultivate routines supportive of insight. All are welcome, no previous experience is required. Whilst guidance will be offered for those who would like to go on to learn mindfulness as a part of their ongoing personal and professional growth, there is no expectation to do so - curious/sceptics welcome.

Next Steps

Please don’t forget that mindfulness is a skill which takes both time and personal commitment to be learned. Whilst you may well experience a change in ‘state’ as a result of an introductory workshop, the researched benefits of mindfulness come from the regular practice of mindfulness meditation and the possibility of changes in ‘trait’.

Those who would like to begin or deepen a practice of mindfulness and compassion are encouraged to engage with an 8 week mindfulness or compassion course. Please see our range of courses available on our website (scroll down for details of upcoming courses) or refer to the UK Network.

Format of the Workshop

This workshop will begin promptly at 9:30am so we recommend arriving 15 minutes early. Please be aware that we will take a short break mid-morning, with refreshments provided. The workshop will conclude at 12:30pm. The session will consist of a mixture of presentation, group discussion and gentle meditation exercises.

The Facilitator

As a Mindfulness Instructor at the Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion Sally Roberts speaks regularly about mindfulness in a variety of settings. A former HR Manager (MCIPD) Sally has taught over 50 mindfulness courses and is passionate about mindfulness in the workplace. Examples of the Centre’s work are shared as contributory authors in Chapman-Clarke’s ‘Mindfulness in the Workplace: An Evidence-based Approach to Improving Wellbeing and Maximizing Performance’.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will this course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK. An 8-week MBSR, MBCT or 10-week MBLC course is generally considered a good starting point and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. Given several of our courses are adaptations of the traditional 8 week format, if you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites with your training provider.

My organisation is interested in/supportive of mindfulness – do you offer in-house training?

Yes we offer a full range of in-house mindfulness training, including stress reduction, resilience, change management, compassionate care, creativity and leadership development. Introductory workshops are an important first step for those wishing to offer mindfulness training. Please see our workplace webpage or get in touch for further information. We have also agreed employee discounts with a number of local organisations. If you are unsure as to whether or not your organisation has this offer in place please check with your HR/Staff Benefits/Management team.
