Event description

Description

The purpose of developing a Mindfulness practice is to help you to become more aware, and present in the moment.

Through observing what is going on inside and around you, mindfulness allows you to nurture your own wellbeing whilst dealing with the everyday pressures faced in challenging school roles.

About the course:

The programme follows an 8-session evidence-based curriculum set out by the Bangor University Centre for Mindfulness. The course is largely experiential with a range of mindfulness practices explored and reflected upon. There are also scenarios, presentations and activities. Since mindfulness can only truly be learnt experientially, the course will involve a different style of learning to what we are used to in the workplace. The emphasis will be on practical exercises and first-hand experience rather than didactic teaching.

A key element of the course is regular home practice following guided meditations. Much like learning a musical instrument or a sport, mindfulness is a skill which takes patience and effort to cultivate. Research demonstrates a clear correlation between completing the home practice and reaping the benefits of the course.

Who is the training for?

The training is for anyone working in education, keen to explore how Mindfulness could support their wellbeing. It is beneficial for those interested in teaching Mindfulness to others in the future as it sets a valuable foundation. The course will invite you to explore Mindfulness from your own experience, which is essential to understanding the wider potential of Mindfulness.

Benefits for the individual

  • Reduce the impact of stress allowing you to respond positively to challenges you face
  • Prioritise your own health and wellbeing, for your own benefit and the benefit of those you interact with
  • Reduce the feeling of ‘time pressure’ many teachers and leaders experience
  • Cultivate self-compassion for yourself and for others
  • Be calmer and more present in your work and relationships

Benefits for schools

By supporting staff on this training programme, schools are:

  • Demonstrating a commitment to staff wellbeing
  • Offering strategies for dealing with stress and professional burnout
  • Developing individuals who could go on to teach Mindfulness to other staff or young people
  • Cultivating new approaches to positive mental health in schools
