Event description

Description

This mindfulness taster session is part of a well-being day held at Northern Integrative Health Practice in Durham.

Over the last few years, mindfulness has gained much in popularity, even though it is a practice that is at least 2500 years old. Many areas of professional life, such as education, health care, and even the police and the military are embracing it, viewing it as an antidote to stress, and a means by which people can cultivate resilience, develop a greater sense of well-being at home and at work, and live a more fulfilled life.

Mindfulness has been famously defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn as, ‘… paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.' (1994: 4). In other words, the ability to focus one's attention on present-moment experience, including bodily sensations, sense experience, thoughts and emotions, without labelling them as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant.

Mindfulness can also be seen as both a practice and a way of living our life. In fact, we can train the mind to become more mindful. Like going to the gym, we can train the mind to pay more conscious attention to what is going on presently in our experience, much like training our muscles. We do this through the practice of meditation. The more we practice the more we benefit!

There is a great deal of research into the benefits of mindfulness. It has been found to:

  • Help people to manage day-to-day stress.
  • Enhance personal well-being.
  • Increase compassion and empathy.
  • Enhance physical and mental health.
  • Enhance productivity.

During this well-being day you will have the opportunity to attend a one hour session, where you will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness meditation, and some of the teachings that underpin it. The session will involve two short meditation practices, and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion. I look forward to seeing you there!
